Remember that New Year Resolution I broke a while ago? No more cookbooks in 2012? Well, I should try and keep that going for many, many years…
Two boxes hold exclusively bread books. Everything else required “only” 8 boxes.
A little update on the moving situation: The company we are working with has been a huge disappointment. They gave us a window of three days for the move to happen, with the assurance of a confirmation of the exact day and approximate time 48 hours in advance. That never happened, and when the final day (yesterday) came and went, they told us the sub-contractors “forgot” to schedule us. We shouldn’t worry, though, they arranged for another sub-contractor to do the job right away.
So, we basically packed the whole house ourselves, and now sit here, hoping the alternative company will indeed park their truck here at 11am and get this adventure going.
Moving brings deep philosophical thoughts to mind. Yesterday I sat outside for a while, staring at the sky, and wondering how a civilization that landed the man on the moon, that built spacecrafts like the Voyager-1, still boldly going where no one has gone before, failed so miserably at the design of the packing tape dispenser.
UPDATE OF SOAP OPERA: We won’t be moving today. Maybe tomorrow, but not even that is sure yet. Sometimes, the only path to take is the one of least resistance.
Oh, Sally, sorry to hear about the moving company… that’s so disappointing but I’m glad you’re maintaining your sense of humour through it all… I had to laugh about the bit on packing tape ;-). Congratulations on getting the job done yourselves and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the duration of the journey! Bon courage – xo.

Kelly, what is happening to us is so hard to believe that I better leave it like that… keeping a sense of humor is something we put as first priority, no matter what. 😉 It does help

Oh dear, I am quite familiar with the untrustworthiness of moving company promises. When I moved across the country, Bekins made me the same promise, 48-hour notice. Then they called one morning and said they were in a town just 2 hours away and I needed to be ready. Panic! And then it turned out they got the town name wrong, were really in LA and 8-10 hours away. Stayed up all night packing, for nothing! Crazy crazy. Fingers crossed that you get everything moved in on time and then can start the happy task of building your new nest!

Kathy, by now I am convinced they have two different settings in the company. One for new prospective clients. When your calls falls there, they are answered right away, level of efficiency at 100%. Once you sign up for the job, you move to the “other reality”. Those phone calls are handled by machines on the “press 1 for this”, “press 2 for that”.
Once you get pass the machines, you face the trained monkeys. No real humans will be available until you demand to speak with a supervisor, over and over and over… 😉

Good luck with the move and I hope it ends up less stressful than the time leading up to the actual event.

Not yet there…. Stress level is sky high, but we know we will laugh about it all at some point… Right?

Your comment about the moon landing, Voyager and the packing tape dispenser is *excellent* – so well put!
I hope that your movers showed up and that you and your things get where you’re going safely and undamaged. Have a drink – or six – when you do.

Still sitting inside a house with too many boxes and not enough dogs…. miss the dogs, wish they were here with us, but they are in good hands with Pat, who runs the kennel and is pretty much her second Mom….

Hope that by the next update we’ll read that your stuff is on the road! I am very impressed to see only eight boxes! Best of luck, Sally! How long is the drive to Manhattan?

The drive is 4 hours and 45 minutes, a little less, a little more depending on the route and traffic. Not too bad, but not insignificant…

Bwa ha ha! Sally you had me in stitches! The packing tape dispenser! Those things have drawn more than one curse word from my mouth! Good luck! I hope the new subs get there soon. 🙂

Kristy, I’ve go so many cuts in my fingers and hands from those packing tape dispensers, it’s not even funny. And, the icing on the cake: my legs are FULL of bruises, maybe from banging into boxes or into furniture – anyway, I am a wreck. A wreck, I tell ya! 😉

Hang in..this too will pass..speaking from experience!!! Hugs… Barb

Thanks, Barb… I know it will, and I know we will laugh about it. At some point I might find the energy to write about what happened today. It is surreal. Unreal. Woody Allen could maybe come up with a script based on today’s developments… (sigh, sigh, sigh)

The only thing that surprises me about you having two boxes for bread cookbooks is that it’s not three!

In this day and age, economically speaking you would think that so many companies that provide products and services don’t need the business judging by the lack of or poor response and incompetence of so many employees that I’ve experienced lately. Craziness I’ll tell ya. Hoping the rest of your move has no more hitches in the giddyap

We are moved in! Thanks to the amazing job done by Quick Moves from Dallas, who came to our rescue… They loaded their truck and a trailer, and we started the trip late on Saturday, arriving here around midnight. They were already at our door by 8am next day, worked very very VERY hard, and now we have the task of turning the place into our home!

Thank goodness, Sally. I’ve been holding my breath! May you and Phil have much joy in your new home.

Our last move was our last! How we could live in a condo for only three and a half years and acculate that much stuff was beyond me! Next move to assisted living and the kids can worry about the homes! LOL!

I feel sorry for the kids once PHil and I are gone…. they will have a lot of work, but I hope it won’t happen for many many MANY years, and who knows? Maybe by then I will have embraced minimalism to the fullest extent of the term…. (yeah, right!)

HAHAHAHA I now don’t feel so bad that I have two shelves of cookbooks which my husband complained about moving. I think your cookbook collection is awesome!!! So sorry moving is a pain in the butt (and it is), it will all be over soon!

This is a bit of a complicated situation, because now that the main moving is over, we still live one week in KS, one week in OK. HOnestly, it’s not easy… but it will pass in a few weeks

So sorry about the whole moving mess Sally and I hear you about the tape dispenser, I wish I could get near that thing without cutting my hands!
We met an amazing Brazilian couple on our trip to Petra, the lady was watching my husband trying to teach our daughter to swim, she cheered her on and then cam to me saying my kids remind her of her grand children and she would like to help and she actually went into the pool and gave Jana a swimming lesson, I will never forget that sweet Brazilian lady and I couldn’t wait to get home to let you know. I hope this puts a smile on your face my friend

How cool! I love to know when a Brazilian does something nice like that, it makes me feel all warm inside…
I wanted to reply to your comment (and the other ones left unaddressed) earlier, but believe me, things are far from calm… I tried a couple of times from my iPhone, but gave up.
Did you know I am probably one of the only Brazilians who only learned to swim at age 45? Hard to imagine, isn’t it? But it is true….
