POST-WORKOUT BREAKFAST

Exercising on weekdays is a bit tricky. I find myself cutting some routines a little short, rushing to eat something quickly, take a shower and go to work.  But Saturdays and Sundays are another story: I can indulge, start with a nice run, top it with some weight training, do the full 90-minute P90X yoga.  Once it’s all over, I relax and enjoy a nice breakfast.   Lately, I’ve been hooked on this yogurt concoction because it is refreshing, not too heavy,  a well-deserved reward after working out.

GREEN APPLE &  YOGURT BOWL
(from the Bewitching Kitchen)

1 cup non-fat yogurt
1/2 large Granny Smith apple, grated
sliced almonds
agave nectar

Toast the sliced almonds lightly, either in an oven or a non-stick skillet.  Watch them very carefully, as they go from toasted to burned in seconds.  Let them cool slightly.

In a bowl, mix the grated apple (no need to peel) with the yogurt, add some agave nectar to your taste.  Sprinkle the almonds on top, a little extra drizzle of agave, and…

ENJOY!

I wish I could give credit to the source for this “recipe” – so simple that it hardly qualifies as such.   I saw a version in the net several months ago, never saved it, just kept it in my memory as something to try.  Maybe the original had honey and a different kind of nuts, but at any rate, start with the green apple and yogurt, add whatever you feel like, including  your favorite cereal, and you can’t go wrong.

I use non-fat yogurt to keep the fat content to a minimum, but you can definitely go for the full fat type, it will be just a tad more decadent, but still good for you.

ONE YEAR AGO: Spices… Did someone say spices?

TWO YEARS AGO: The lighter side of meatloaf

  1. Green apple and yogurt, what a great idea! Will try that for sure, I love a little yogurt and fruit in the morning, but usually go for blueberries – maybe they could work together with the apples too.
    thanks, Sally

  2. Looks like a great post workout breakfast. So impressed that your doing P90X. I can’t even imagine!!! I usually stick with my cardio/weight routines that are about 30 minutes. Any more than that and I lose motivation. 😉

    • Kristy, I’ve been doing the P90X for over 2 years, by far the best move ever as far as exercising goes. I did two complete series, 90 + 90, and after that I pick and choose the workouts according to my mood, so to speak. I am planning on writing a post about it, just haven’t had the time for it yet.

  3. What a good idea. I have a hard time working out on an empty stomach so I’d opt for half of this delicious yogurt bowl before exercise and half afterwards. Love nuts with cereal/yogurt – what a nice breakfast to look forward to after your hard work! p.s. How’s Buck settling in?

    • I have the opposite problem, I cannot do any exercise if I eat even a spoonful of yogurt before, or a bit of those cereal bars. It makes me queasy and often “recycle” it 😉
Very long runs were always tricky for that reason, I would have to go on an empty stomach and take those gel shots (that are pretty horrible) to keep me going.

Buck is doing great, things are still tricky for having to keep them apart, but getting better (fingers crossed)

    • You are welcome – by the way, depending on how much agave nectar you add, this bowl can be only barely sweet, because of the green apple. So if you have a real sweet tooth, splurge on the agave or use honey

  4. I’m so interested in this yoga you do! I have done yoga every morning for years, but I’m assuming this is more intense. I’m going to look into it further, I’m so glad you wrote about it. Yogurt and fruit always feels “healthy” to me and making me feel like I’m taking care of myself and eating good!!

    • Of all the routines in P90X, yoga is the most controversial – yoga geeks feel that Tony took way too many liberties with it, and that is true, it is a huge departure from the real thing. However, it is one of the most challenging workouts, and the system would not be the same without it. Can you tell I’m hooked? 😉

I really must find the time to compose a full review – maybe next month…. Stay tuned!
