A PEARFECT DRINK

In almost three years of blogging, I have shared one recipe for a drink. One.  Check the index, and you will see caipirinha, the Brazilian national drink, sitting all alone in that category.   This disturbing situation  changes today, with a nice drink Phil made for us this past weekend, inspired by a recent show from Giada de Laurentiis: the peartini.   We modified the recipe making it a lot less sweet, and a tad less alcoholic.

PEARTINI FOR TWO
(inspired by Giada de Laurentiis)

for simple syrup (you won’t use it all)
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
for drink
4  shots of pear juice (homemade, of course!)
2 shots of Vodka (we like Stolichnaya)
2 shots of lime juice
1 shot of simple syrup
shaker full of ice
two gorgeous strawberries

Make the simple syrup by heating the water and the sugar in a small sauce pan, until completely dissolved. Allow it to cool to room temperature, and store in the fridge for future uses.

Place ice cubes in your shaker until half full. Add all other ingredients for the drink, shake well and pour on martini glasses.

Garnish with a strawberry sliced halfway, not all the way through (obviously).

Sip slowly, it will match perfectly your favorite type of sushi and sashimi.

ENJOY!

When juicing the pears, be careful because they oxidize very quickly.  Mix the juice with some lime juice to slow down the process, or the drink will have a bit of a brownish hint.  No harm in flavor, only in looks.

You may ask why the strawberry decoration when we could have added a slice of pear? Two reasons:

1. We passed all pears through our Juiceman Jr., and forgot to put aside a couple of slices for garnish.

2. Strawberries are a lot sexier. So, there! 😉

  1. I think you mean a shaker full of ICE not of glass, but other than that, this sounds like a lovely drink and it must be healthy cause it has fruit juice in it. 🙂 Must buy a bottle of vodka soon.

  2. What a lovely drink!! Great tips on the pears and oxidation. I think a strawberry definitely looks sexier perched on the glass than a slice of pear!! How sweet for your hubby to make you such a special drink!

    • We reserve our alcohol intake for Fridays and Saturdays only, and wine has not been agreeing with us lately, so he is coming up with drinks for a change… it’s fun and festive, perfect to end the week

    • Oh, I LOVED the video! So true, I am now relieved I didn’t call it a “Pear Martini” – can you imagine? I would not be able to live with myself, and you would probably stop reading my blog! Justifiably so, of course… 😉

I will be very very careful with my terminology. But, all joking aside, it’s true that “Martini” is a one and only drink, a classic that should not be messed with

(now, if you see my post on caipirinhas, you’ll realize I also have issues with the variations folks use in the making of it. Capirinha MUST be made one glass at a time, to order. Make me a big pitcher, and I WILL throw a fit! 😉

  3. This sounds delicious! I’ve never had a pear version before, but it sounds delightful. And I hadn’t thought about using limes to prevent oxidation – I usually use lemons, but it makes perfect sense. (Not to mention sounds tasty!) And I too love the strawberry garnish! 😉

    • Definitely! In fact, we have been using all sorts of fruit juices mixed with carbonated water (which we make ourselves with our carbonator), crushed ice, and they are all delicious, although we omit the simple syrup – we don’t like sweet drinks with our dinner.

Phil made one that included a splash of pomegranate juice and it looked gorgeous

I bet some crushed mint leaves would make a pear juice pretty nice for summer, if you dilute it with carbonated water

    • Indeed, the good part is that Phil makes two only and we take our time. If after dinner we are still up for a little more, he might make a second batch, but a smaller version. Still, we seem to deal with it much better than wine. Sad turn of events, we used to love some wine with dinner… but the headaches are not fun.
