As I’ve mentioned before, my fitness guru is Tony Horton, and I’ve been using his P90X system for 3 years. I’m about to finish his awesome new series, P90X2, with only one workout left to do (yeaaaaah!).

I’d like to highlight one particular exercise in his routine, called Superman. It’s already present in the original series, but in the X2 version it gets a little harder: instead of short 10 second intervals of the posture, you try to hold it for a full 45 seconds. As the weeks go by, the idea is to raise your legs and arms higher, or add resistance by holding a bar.

I am sure Tony Horton would appreciate my own take on it, as it adds a bit more flexibility to the range of motion in the upper arms. Normally, I get the added resistance from both sides, but due to the nature of the gadgets I had available, this time the right side of my body got some extra attention!

My life has been an amazing journey. I’ve lived in different countries, worked in different labs, and changed my line of research quite a bit over the years. The last drastic move was from Paris, France to Norman, Oklahoma, in what was classic “culture shock.” However, the past 18 years in this small town were the happiest of my life. It’s always great to go back to Paris, or visit New York, to spend time in California, or chill out with my folks in Sao Paulo, but life in a college town has unique appeal. And because we’ve had such a great time living and working here, we expected to call Norman our home forever.

But it was not meant to be. A new, exciting adventure lies ahead: Phil accepted the position of the Head of the Department of Biochemistry at Kansas State University, so we’ll move our home (and our lab) to another college town! About the same size of Norman when we first arrived here almost 20 years ago, Manhattan seems like a great place. We are ready to face this challenge together. If it all goes according to plan, we will move around the last week of June, and then move the lab a couple of months after that.

Following Celia’s footsteps once more, I share with you what is going on in our kitchen this month.

In My Kitchen…. A little celery miracle!

Did you know that if you cut the base of celery and place it in water for a few days a new celery plant will grow from it? All you have to do is plant it in your garden. Thanks to a tip from my friend Cindy, I have my own celery experiment going on, and this baby is now outside (fingers crossed for a long, productive life!)

A bundt cake tester with a probe that changes color when the cake is perfectly cooked in the center. Yeah, I need all the help I can get as far as cake baking is concerned.

My newest toy, a tortilla press! Corn tortillas from scratch are infinitely better than store-bought, and a good quality press makes all the difference. A blog post about it is in the works…

A while ago I was invited to write a guest post over at Feastie, and I chose a sourdough bread for the occasion. To my delight, I recently got a second invitation to do a guest feature. My Mom has always told me that if you are invited twice to go to someone’s house, it must mean they like you, so I hope it works the same for food blogging! Jessica asked me to blog on any type of meat recipe. We are meat lovers here, so that was not a problem. But I don’t face any challenge without some hyperventilation (and a little drama), so my poor husband had to endure me walking in circles around the kitchen, talking to myself, talking to the dogs, trying to pick the perfect recipe. That odd behavior lasted for about a week. It can be unsettling after a while. My Mom got it right twice: I married a saint.

So, if you are wondering what all my hyperventilation led to, jump right over to Feastie and find out! Two words for you: pork and spinach. Three: feta. Four: delicious!
